How Credits Work

Our platform operates on a credit-based system to give you maximum flexibility. You use credits for various actions, from messaging agents to ingesting knowledge. Each plan includes a monthly credit allowance, and you can purchase additional credits at any time.

Context Budget Credits

For each agent, you can set a context budget, which acts as a spending cap for each message. This budget determines:

  • Context Window Size: Higher budgets allow more conversation history, knowledge base content, and web results.
  • Maximum Message Cost: The context budget is your total budget for all LLM-related costs for a single message, including processing input (like history and knowledge) and generating output (reasoning and the final response). It acts as a maximum cost cap, preventing unexpected charges.
  • Intelligent Allocation: Our system automatically distributes your budget across message history, URLs, and knowledge base content based on priority.

Each model tier has a minimum required context budget that an agent owner must set. For example, agents using Standard models must have a budget of at least 3 credits, while Premium models require at least 10 credits. Agent owners can set a budget higher than the minimum to allow for more complex interactions.

Intelligent Context Allocation

Our system intelligently manages your context budget by prioritizing the most relevant information for your query. It balances conversation history, knowledge base content, and web results to provide the best possible answer while staying within your set budget.

Note: This allocation strategy is continuously optimized based on performance and usage patterns to improve results.

Knowledge Ingestion

Credits are used when you add documents to an agent's knowledge base. The cost is calculated per page, making it simple to estimate ingestion costs.

  • Page Ingestion 3 credits / page

Example: Uploading a 25-page PDF to an agent's knowledge base costs 75 credits.

Messaging & Agent Usage

Message costs are based on the amount of credits consumed, with a minimum cost per message depending on the model tier.1

  • Basic Models 1-4+ credits / message
  • Standard Models2 1-12+ credits / message
  • Premium Models2,4 1-40+ credits / message

Example: A conversation involving 5 messages with a premium model agent would typically cost between 5 and 200 credits, depending on the model used.

Tools3,4

When agents use tools like Web Search or Browsing, credits are consumed for each action performed.

  • Web Search 2 credits / search
  • URL Page Visit 4 credits / page

Example: An agent performs a web search (2 credits), visits 2 pages (8 credits), and responds using a standard model (12 credits). The content from those pages is then included in the context budget, for a total of 22 credits.

1 The actual cost of a message depends on usage, but will not exceed the context budget set by the agent owner.

2 The format 'A-B+' means the minimum cost per message is 'A' credits, and the tier's minimum required context budget is 'B' credits. The '+' indicates the agent owner can set a higher budget.

3 Can be used during messaging and knowledge ingestion.

4 Access to premium models and tools depends on agent settings.

Model Tiers

We categorize our AI models into tiers to provide a clear understanding of their capabilities and associated cost per use.

  • Basic Models (e.g., Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite, GPT-5 Nano, Grok 4 Fast) are highly efficient for straightforward tasks.
  • Standard Models (e.g., Claude 3.5 Haiku, Grok 3 Mini) offer a strong balance of performance and cost for more advanced needs.
  • Premium Models (e.g., Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-5) provide state-of-the-art intelligence for the most complex and demanding applications.

Credit Management

We provide a flexible and transparent system for managing your credits, ensuring you have control over your usage and spending.

  • Credit Pooling

On Business and Education team plans, credits are pooled and shared across all team members. This allows for flexibility in usage, as more active members can draw from the central pool.

Example: A team of 5 on the Team Basic plan has a total of 7,500 credits per month. An administrator can set a monthly spending limit of 1,000 credits for a specific member to manage individual usage within the shared pool.

  • Additional Credits

You can purchase additional credits anytime from your account dashboard or set an automatic credit purchase budget to ensure uninterrupted service. Additional credits are valid for 3 months on Standard plans and roll over for up to 4 months on Education plans.

  • Credit Usage Priority

To ensure you get the most value, our system automatically uses the credits that are closest to their expiration date first. This applies to both your monthly plan credits and any additional credits you purchase.

Example: If you have 500 monthly credits expiring on Oct 1st and 1,000 additional credits expiring on Dec 15th, any usage before Oct 1st will first draw from the 500 monthly credits.

Additional Credit Pricing

Run out of credits? You can purchase additional credits at any time. All additional credits are valid for 3 months (or 4 months for Education plans) from the date of purchase.

Fair Billing Policy

Most enterprise software pricing is designed to charge you per user regardless of how many people on your team are actively using it. At Alkimi, we believe you should only be billed for what you use on our Team plans.

Billing for Active Members

On paid plans, you’re billed for all active members of your workspace. A member is considered "active" for a billing period if they use at least one credit.

How the Fair Billing Policy Works

On our monthly Team plans, we monitor member activity. If a member uses zero credits during an entire billing period, we consider them inactive. On your next bill, we'll automatically add a credit to your account for the amount you paid for that member.

Team Plans

For our Team plans (Business and Education), our Fair Billing Policy applies on monthly subscriptions.

  • At the start of each billing period, you are billed for every member.
  • If a member was inactive for the entire previous period, we automatically add a credit to your account for that member's cost.
  • A minimum of one license is charged per organization.

Education Plans

Our Student and Educator plans offer extra flexibility.

  • Your monthly credits are valid for 4 months.
  • We only charge you the first time you use credits each month, which resets your monthly renewal date.
  • Students: No fees are charged for inactive months.
  • Educators: A $2 maintenance fee is charged for inactive months to maintain your account.

Example: A Team Member Becomes Inactive

Our Fair Billing Policy automatically credits you for inactive members on a monthly basis. Let's look at a detailed example for a team of 5 members on the Team Pro plan ($20/user/month), where the normal bill is $100.

  1. A Team Member Becomes Inactive

A team member, Alex, is active for the first part of the month, then stops using the service. The team is billed for all 5 members as usual.

    Charge for 5 members: $100.00

    Total Bill: $100.00

  2. Member Remains Inactive

Alex remains inactive for the entire month of February. The team is still billed for 5 members at the start of March, as the credit is applied retroactively.

    Charge for 5 members: $100.00

    Total Bill: $100.00

  3. Credit is Issued

Because Alex was inactive for all of March, a Fair Billing credit is applied. This will continue for as long as they remain inactive.

    Charge for 5 members: $100.00

    Credit for inactive member: -$20.00

    Total Bill: $80.00

Example: A Student's Pay-As-You-Go Billing

A student on the monthly plan ($5/month) has a flexible billing cycle, where their monthly credits roll over for up to four months. Here is a step-by-step example:

  1. First Billing Cycle

The student's first use of credits on Sep 15th triggers their first bill, and they are Billed $5 (+3000 Credits). These new credits are valid until Jan 15th. This sets their renewal date to Oct 15th. During this cycle, they use 1000 credits.

    Credits Used: 1000
    Credits Remaining: 2000
  2. Inactive Cycle

The student is inactive for the entire billing period. At the end of the cycle on Nov 15th, No Charge.

    Credits Used: 0
    Credits Remaining: 2000
  3. Activity Resumes

The student uses 2500 credits this month. For the first use in this new cycle, they are Billed $5 (+3000 Credits). The new credits are valid until Mar 20th.

Rollover Credits Used: 2000 of 2000
New Credits Used: 500 of 3000
    Total Remaining: 2500

Example: An Educator's Pay-As-You-Go Billing

An educator's billing is similar, where monthly credits also roll over for up to four months, but it includes a maintenance fee for inactive months. An educator is only "inactive" if they use zero credits for a full billing cycle.

  1. First Billing Cycle

The educator's first use of credits on Sep 15th triggers their first bill, and they are Billed $5 (+2800 Credits). These new credits are valid until Jan 15th. This sets their renewal date to Oct 15th. During this cycle, they use 400 credits.

    Credits Used: 400
    Credits Remaining: 2400
  2. Inactive Cycle

The educator is inactive for the entire billing period. At the end of the cycle on Nov 15th, they are charged a $2 Maintenance Fee.

    Credits Used: 0
    Credits Remaining: 2400
  3. Activity Resumes

The educator uses 500 credits this month. For the first use in this new cycle, they are Billed $5 (+2800 Credits). The new credits are valid until Mar 20th.

Rollover Credits Used: 500 of 2400
New Credits Used: 0 of 2800
    Total Remaining: 4700

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try before I buy?

Yes, you can get started without a credit card. Your account begins on a trial that includes 800 credits for you to explore the platform's features. These trial credits expire after 7 days or if you upgrade to a paid plan.

What is a context budget and how does it work?

The context budget is a per-agent setting that controls the maximum credits that can be used for each message, covering both input (conversation history, knowledge base content, and web results) and output (the agent's reasoning and response). Higher budgets allow for more comprehensive context and longer responses but cost more per message. You can adjust this setting for each agent based on your needs.

Why do model tiers have a minimum context budget?

Each model tier has a minimum required context budget (e.g., 12 credits for Standard, 40 for Premium) to ensure a baseline level of agent functionality. Agent owners must set a context budget for their agents that meets this minimum. The actual cost of a message depends on usage (starting from 1 credit) and will not exceed the budget set by the agent owner. This gives you control over the maximum cost per message.

What exactly counts as 'active' for the Fair Billing Policy?

A member is considered "active" during a billing period if they use at least one credit. This could be from any action, such as sending a message, ingesting a document, or using a tool. If a member uses zero credits for an entire billing period, they are considered inactive.

If a team member is inactive, do I get a cash refund?

Our Fair Billing Policy provides account credits, not cash refunds. If a member on a monthly Team plan is inactive for a full billing period, we automatically add a credit to your account for the amount you paid for that member. This credit will be applied to your next invoice.

Is there a minimum monthly charge for team plans?

Yes, all team plans (Business and Education) have a minimum charge equivalent to one user license per month. This ensures that the workspace remains active. For example, even if all members are inactive, you will still be billed for one member.

How are credits used when I have both monthly and additional credits?

Our system is designed to give you the most value. It will always use the credits that are set to expire soonest first. This applies to all credit types, including your monthly plan credits, any rolled-over credits (on Education plans), and any additional credits you have purchased.

What happens to rolled-over credits if I switch from a monthly to an annual Education plan?

When you switch from a monthly to an annual Student or Educator plan, your billing cycle is updated to renew annually. Any existing rolled-over credits from your previous monthly cycles will still be available for use, but they will retain their original 4-month expiration dates. Our system will always prioritize using the credits that are set to expire soonest.

What happens if I go over my plan's limits?

If you use all the credits included in your plan, you can purchase additional credits at any time to continue using our services without interruption. You can also set an automatic credit purchase budget from your account dashboard.

Can I change my plan?

Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time from your billing settings. Upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades are scheduled for the end of your current billing cycle.

How do annual plans work?

When you subscribe to an annual plan, you are billed for the entire year upfront at a discounted rate. Your credit allowance is still provided on a monthly basis, not all at once for the year. The primary benefits are the cost savings and the convenience of a single yearly payment. The Fair Billing Policy for inactive members does not apply to annual plans.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Secure payment processing is handled by Stripe. For Enterprise plans, we also support invoicing and bank transfers.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time from your billing settings. Your plan will remain active until the end of the current billing period, and you will not be charged again.

Can I get a refund?

We generally do not offer refunds. However, if you believe you were incorrectly charged for a license that was not used, please contact our support team to review your case. Please note that refunds are not guaranteed.
